Can I use my shampoo to give my dog a bath?

The answer is No again. Dog shampoos have a different Ph factor

So how should I select shampoo for my dog?

Here you go…

The first thing that you should look at is your dog’s coat. It can be short, long, curly, thin, thick, dry, silky, corded, double coated etc. Depending on the type of coat or fur that your dog has, you have to select the dog shampoo.

Thin coat dogs

Thin coat dogs are those dogs whose skin will be easily visible. They have delicate skin. Such dogs do not need frequent bath. But when they are given a bath, care should be taken that the soap is not that concentrated. Even if it is a shampoo, it should not be too harsh on their skin. Make sure to condition their skin in a gentle manner.

Medium coat dogs

Medium coat dogs have thicker skin than thin coat dogs. We can use shampoos that give you lather to give bath to these kind of dogs. Make sure to get rid of the dirt, ticks and give them a clean bath.

Thick coat dogs

Mountain dogs usually have thick coats. And they require shampoos that produce a lot of lather. They might need a couple of more rinses than dogs with other coat types.

Now having made the statement clear about the three basic types of coats, let us get into a warning zone. Do not use shampoo that is used by human beings. The skin pH of a dog is more neutral compared to human beings. The standard pH value for a dog shampoo should range between 6.5-7.5. The pH value of shampoos used by humans beings range between 4.5-5.5 and are more acidic and hence they are not at all suitable for your pet dogs. Hence do not use shampoos used by human beings for your dogs.  If you want to read about how frequently you can give your dog a bath, read our blog on that topic How to give your dog a bath?
